Passive cooling an XFX 4870?

That's an odd custom cooler... I keep my 4870's fan running at 30% when I'm not in a game and at that level it's pretty much silent. Try adjusting your fan speed in CCC and see if you can get it to a level where it's quiet enough for your taste while still providing adequate cooling. If you aren't able to do that, then you might not have a choice other than replacing the cooler.

if you sold your 4870 and had money for the MSI 275GTX twin frozr i would say go for it, the cooler is silent to me. BIG improvement from my 4850 and a lot cooler, but you could always wait for the new cards.

Yeah... I won't be going that route. I'd rather wait for the 58xx series and buy one of those.

It's possible your card isn't even reference design so I'd suggest looking carefully at the layout of your card (remove the current cooler) and ensure that an aftermarket one will fit properly before going any further...

I have a Sapphire 4870 with a Arctic cooling accelero twin turbo on it. when I put my fan controller in place I forget to shut down the computer and the VGA run at 90% folding for about 2 hours and never reach over 92. It's sur that the case have a decent airflow but that show you that's everything possible:P
