Yep. That's what I'm thinking. I did see some photos on-line of someone actually sticking the probe on top of the chip but he/she also did not think it was really a good idea. Not sure what the results were but I'm not going to take a chance.

You're either going to ruin the contact of the HS to CPU or crush the sensor. It has been done where you mill a channel into the middle of the IHS.

Personally the only probe i put on the CPU was on the back of the motherboard, also placed one on a RAM heat spreader one on a hard drive and the last is running along the GPU plug reading the ambient air near the center of the case.

I suppose you could put them on the actual CPU and or GPU or memory IC but that's also likely to hinder your cooling performance, not to mention a lot more work.

I appreciate the tips, traitoR. I think I'll be wiring it all tonight. Placing the cpu probe on the other side of the mobo is a great idea. I imagine the temp difference would not be much.

I plan to place probes:

-CPU
-GPU
-RAM
-Case exhaust or center

So I managed to get it all set up tonight. Things are looking good but I do have a couple of questions that perhaps can be answered by an MFC2 or MFC3 owner.

1. The CNPS9700 CPU fan is 4-pin. It seems the C3 cable cannot be used with this fan. Since the CNPS9700 is PWM (I think) should I just be using the provded 4-pin PWM cable directly from fan to MFC3? Which means the fan will not be plugged into the mobo. Or do I use the C3 cable from mobo 4-pin at the same time as using the PWM?

2. Can the thermal sensor probes be placed/taped directly to the surface of the mobo? Will the contacts covering solder points cause a short or something? I want to monitor the temp of the CPU as traitoR describes by placing the probe on the back of the mobo directly behind the CPU mount. But there are a lot of solder points there. Same with GPU.

Sorry if these are dumb questions but I'm a noob to this sort of thing. I also sent an email to Zalman but figure folk here may already have the answers.

Cheers!
