I'm starting to go the silent route with all my fans now.

I know i'm not going to get as good of cooling but as long as i'm not getting screamed at by the wife at 3am its some thing i can live with

Considering that the vast majority of fan noise ratings are BS, it would be pretty hard to choose a reliable option. I picked 20db myself, but only because that's often considered to be the threshhold of most people's hearing.

For me, anything over 1100RPM for a 120mm is starting to get loud/annoying.

Whats with the cap at 50db?
I don't mind that, but beyond that it gets a little loud.

And I try to keep it under 6k RPM for noise and safety reasons.

I'm still baffled by those people out there that actually like a loud computer ... I can't remember the name, but there was a heat sink available at one time that claimed it was the "world's loudest" and people actually bought it. WTF???

I like quiet fans, and am starting to purchase them instead of tri-cools. I do not care about the LED's anymore, instead i want to be able to hear stuff on the lowest sound setting. Jk, but you get my point. If I could, i'd have a completely silent computer.

For my gaming PC, as long as I can't hear the fans over my headphones I am fine. However my server and HTPC need to be inaudible @ 6 feet.

I never really cared, but I'm looking at high speed fans now, they are all pushing 35-40dBA, and I wonder if they'll drive me crazy...
