Default My 1st GPU cooling Mod, any advise?

Just picked up a Duorb from Thermaltake for my 8800GTS 512. I have never tried a GPU cooling mod before and I am wondering if there are any tips before I get started.

Any advise would be welcome.

Hmmm. Well I changed my heatsink to a duorb. Now I have no video.

I see my startup screen, then blackness. Nothing...

I am wondering since the Duorb does not connect to the stock cooling power on the GPU itself, but to a molex instead, is the GPU thnking the fan is dead and not rendering video as protection? Or did I pouch my cooler?

Help!!!

Ok, well problem 1 resolved, I used the wrong standoffs. Heatsink was nto actually touching core.

However, now that thats done... I am not at all happy with this cooler.

On stock cooler I had fan set to 70% during folding. This was a quiet speed and my GPU temps never raised above 58 deg C, now with the duord, fans are not adjustable as the do not connect to the GPU. Fans running at the one speed they have I am now hitting 90 deg C.

Need to shut down and go back to stock befor it fries. See you soon.

Well I shut down F@H and my idle temps have dropped off to 36deg. But as soon as I start folding the temps spike in a flash. I actually reached 91deg in under 5 min of folding. I have triple checked the mount, I also used Artic Cooling MX2 thermal compound.

The Thermaltake DUord is a huge failure in my books.

That was $40.00 wasted.

How did you apply the thermal paste to the GPU?

Thin even layer across.

I have the stock cooler back on. Removed the original thermal tape and replaced it on all points of contact with MX2.

My folding temps are now down to 54 deg C.

So the MX2 has made a 4 deg improvement over stock compound.

I really suggest you return or exchange it for something else, you have a pretty good argument considering the results. Do your best to package it back up like new, just don't leave until you get something back for it.

Regards,

EE

Amen. Exchange / return.

Go for a Thermalright HR-03 instead.

Thermaltake DuOrb VGA Cooler Review

Overclocker Cafe - Thermaltake DuOrb VGA Cooler Review

[Phoronix] Thermaltake DuOrb CL-G0102 Review

I read the top 3 results I got when I googled it. Guess I should have read deeper. All these reviews raved about it.

My bad, I will be returning it. Already packed up like new. Fortunately I purchased locally.
