Default prime95 without cooler!

Damn pushpins, Vendetta2 fell off while PC was in Prime95. Good thing I was in front of PC. Cores went to 90s, then one core shot up to 100 degreeC, I rapidly killed prime95, shut down PC. 2 top pushpins unset, cooler was hanging on bottom two in tower case.

I suppose cpu was throttling like hell. I am surprised it did not crash, BSOD or anything. I actually orderly shut down Vista. Those 45 nm quads are real monsters.

I hope no permanent damage was done to cpu itself.

hehehe....

Don't try this at home kids!!! (These chips are pretty resillient. I once fried an AMD 1G Thunderbird by thinking that the HSF would be fine unsecured so long as it was making contact with the cpu..... took all of 3 seconds to fry the chip :) ).

Have you got it back up and running properly?

When you are using the pushpins on the Vendetta2 make sure you hear a faint click-click, if you don't they are not all the way in...

This will do both sockets NCIX.com - Buy Xigmatek ACK-I7361 Crossbow Mounting Kit LGA1336 775 for HDT-S963 HDT-S1283 RS-S1283 - ACK-I7361 In Canada..

If you can find this I'd be shocked OCZ Technology | Products | Cooling Products | OCZ Force LGA 775 Retention Brackets - Vendetta Series

Pushpins do not suck; I'm really tired of people saying this.

The problem comes into play when people don't know how to properly use them and that manufacturers use large heatsinks with pushpins.

Stock Intel coolers were perfectly fine with them.

Also a lot of time its PEBKAC errors and not realizing they haven't actually locked the pins into place before moving on or locking pins in a criss-cross pattern which if they read the Intel instructions would tell you ;)

PEBKAC, the first i have seen or heard of that acronym and quite funny. I can think of about a gazillions situations here that would of been very appropriate.

Although Pushpins if used properly are somewhat reliable in their function, I'd suggest like the others have here to get the bolt-thru kit and call it a day with that.

Quads can run hotter than hell sometimes, hopefully with luck nothing got cooked in the whole process.

I never thought I would hear someone passionately defend pushpins. Enaberif pushpins suck and no matter if you think it is user error or not I hate them. Hmm a crap piece of plastic or metal bolt which is easier and more reliable..

I use to defend pushpins, because if they are seated properly they do the job just fine. But, then I got my Noctua cooler, and I will never go back to pushpins. They really do suck compared to the ease of a bolt through kit. Not to mention, knowing your cooler isn't going to go anywhere.
