I'd be skeptical. In a blind-test between a good sound card and modern onboard, I'm pretty sure most people would fail miserably. I consider myself a fairly discerning, but I'm pretty sure I'd fail a few times too. But you can only do so much in software, before you have to turn that data into actual sound and send it to your headphones/speakers, and that's where onboard audio loses out.
