Well, it's definitely the DIMM slot and not the Windows Diagnostic Tool. The bootable memtest86 gave me errors with a stick in B1 and no errors without one in there.
Oh well. I'm not going to RMA the board though - too much hassle. This will only speed up my decision on a good DDR3 board, and the P5Q will do just fine as a render node, even with only 6GB RAM. Maybe I could get some 4 GB sticks though - the board does support up to 16 GB... supposedly.
