x48 or p45 for new build?
So I'm grateful to everyone who helped me out choosing parts for the new PC I'm about to build. The parts I have chosen are the following:
Mushkin SP PC2-6400 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-800 CL5-5-5-18 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit
Core 2 Quad Pro Q9550 2.83 GHz Quad Core Processor (1333 MHz 45NM) Socket 775 (12MB L2 Cache)($359.95)
Buy Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q9550 2.83 GHz Quad Core Processor (1333 MHz 45NM) Socket 775 (12MB L2 Cache) - BX80569Q9550
Some of you suggested a dual core, but I'm not exclusively using this system for gaming so it will come in useful for the applications I run.
Case: Coolermaster Cosmos Full Tower
Case 5X5.25 6X3.5INT No
Audio eSATA ($192.66)
GPU: ATI 4870
Barracuda 7200.11 3.5IN 500GB SATA2 8.5MS 7200RPM 32MB Cache NCQ Hard Drive
($89.00) x 2
750W ATX 12V 60A 24PIN ATX Power Supply Active PFC 120MM Fan ($105)

HT Omega Striker 7.1 Channel PCI Sound Card 24BIT DTS Dolby Digital Live S/PDIF IN/OUT Coaxial
NCIX.com - Buy HT Omega Striker 7.1 Channel PCI Sound Card 24BIT DTS Dolby Digital Live S/PDIF IN/OUT Coaxial - STRIKER_7.1 In Canada.
Pioneer DVR-216DBK Black 20X SATA OEM DVDRW No Software
NCIX.com - Buy Pioneer DVR-216DBK Black 20X SATA OEM DVDRW No Software - DVR-216DBK In Canada.
Now for the mobo. I was going to go with SugarJ's suggestion in getting a
ASUS P5Q Pro ATX
NCIX.com - Buy ASUS P5Q Pro ATX LGA775 P45 DDR2 2PCI-E16 Crossfire 3PCI-E1 2PCI SATA2 Sound GBLAN eSATA Motherboard - P5Q Pro In Canada.
But I heard that p45 boards don't offer full x16/x16 PCI-E bandwidth in Crossfire. Since I plan on getting another 4870 as time goes on, should I get an x48 board instead, which does offer x16/x16 bandwidth?
Which x48 mobo should I go with if that's the case?
or should I stick with the Rampage formula?
NCIX.com - Buy ASUS Rampage Formula X48 ATX DDR2 2PCI-E16 CrossFire SATA2 RAID Sound GBLAN Motherboard - RAMPAGE FORMULA In Canada.
Since the heart of the computer is the mobo, I don't want to skimp out and be restricted by it.
On a side note, whats the general opinion on the Raptor drives? Worth it for the price? Or just stick with a 7,200rpm HD?
Thanks again! I love these forums. I've been out of touch with computers for a while but I'm making a comeback and its nice to see that you don't get treated like a stupid newb here.
