My System Specs

I didn't notice any issues ripping to flac, however I was using a dual core Celeron when I ripped all of my cds so I wasn't expecting blistering speeds... :)

When I started looking into external ODDs I avoided any of the slim USB powered ones based on feedback I got from members here about them not being optimal. I had been running a full sized Samsung for quite a while but buggered that one up myself trying to flash the firmware on it (not even completely sure I had the right model.... ;) ). Once that died I started looking for something I could upgrade with a stock ODD if required and the Vantec was pretty much the only available option I could find (even then it was one of those "we don't stock it, but we can get it over XXX period of time" items).

edit: Just read your response to 10e and am not sure what settings I'm using... I just started on flac and used XBMC defaults.

edit2: I'd think that it would be the ODD itself that affects this as opposed to the interface. With a unit like the Vantec you can put whatever ODD into it that you want.
