The M500 uses 128GBit NAND ICs on the entire line. The M550 uses 64GBit on the smaller drives and 128Gbit'ers on the big ones. This means the difference in performance from one drive size to the next on the M550 is a lot LESS than it is on the M500. Its rather noticeable the difference in performance between the M500 240 and M550 256....and insanely large 120vs128. Now with that being said where you are going to be using it in a laptop (lower power SATA controller) and on a slower bus...the difference will not be 'massive'...but if you can afford the M550 get the M550. When you upgrade the laptop you will get a nice boost in performance IF you go the m550 route.

YMMV
