Some people like the 'clean' look and have as much on the board as possible. Other use it so that they can tear out the hdd cage and use the area for water cooling. Its not all THAT common...but it is becoming more common.

This board is a beast. I have been using it for the past 3 months and it has been rock stable. So much so that I have put it in my own testbed and expect it to stay there for a long time. Highly recommend it.
