When I bought my M5A97 originally, I was running an original Phenom I quad core. Then I put in a Phenom II Quad Core, a Phenom II Hex Core, and finally a Vishera 8350. Add in an 8150, and that's four processor generations, so far.

EDIT: Wait, actually the original Phenom's weren't compatible with AM3 platforms. So, make that three generations.
I went from a 5000+ X2 Black Edition, to Phenom 9950 on a Gigabyte AM2+ mobo. That board cooked on me so then I bought an Asus M3A79T Deluxe (also AM2+). After that I upgraded to the new Phenom II 940 when it was released, then to a Phenom II 1100T. Eventually I found a good deal here at HWC on a Crosshair V and ran the 1100T in that for a while. Then the upgrade bug bit again so I went for an 8350 and lived happily ever after. The end.

One of these days I'd like to try a 3770K and Maximus V with my 7970's just to see if there's any difference other than heat and power consumption.
