Sounds like there are some bad sectors on the drive and it's basically dying. Copy everything off of it to another drive so you don't loose everything. You can run a chkdsk /r which will recover any readable information from the bad sectors. I'd only do this after copying what you can if there were files that you couldn't copy as this may save it.

Create something idiot proof and they will make a better idiot.
