My System Specs

Default

With that budget an i5 (likely a refurb) is about as good as its going to get. I am not sure what programs he uses for graphic design, but you could look into if it can take advantage of AMD APU (GPGPU). If it can than an AMD A8 or better may be able to be found in the budget and give better performance. If the programs he uses doesn't work with GPGPU, then an i5 is the way to go. You may be able to get a newer i5 3xxx around the same price, but you may be waiting a while if you want a deal (especially if you want to find an ASUS).

Bestbuy.ca has a recert lenovo with the same specs, but a i5 3210 for $380, but its currently out of stock.

Lenovo IdeaPad 15.6" Laptop - Grey (Intel Core i5-3210M / 750GB HDD / 6GB RAM) - English-Refurbished : Refurbished Laptops - Best Buy Canada

In stock at futureshop, but its $550.
