For the cost of an optical drive just get a new one. The adapter will likely cost just as much or within a few dollars. For the HDD get a USB adaptor, they are very cheap. If he plans on using an old IDE drive as a system drive (operating system) he will be sorely disappointed at his new computer no feeling very fast.
