@hawk, you can not get 4Tb and RAID 5 out of 4 1Tb drives. I know Nodscene was not perfectly clear but the Synology rig noted is a 5 drive unit.
I do not own one but Synology has good reviews. I doubt you would have a problem with stability. Even if you have to reboot it every week what can be expected from a couple grand? What does he expect to do with this "NAS"? Does he realise that RAID is not a backup? Cheap businesses are generally not worth doing business with.
