Any specific reason he needs 6Gbps ports? They will only benefit SSDs. Either way if he doesn't need RAID I would suggest grabbing a cheap rebranded LSI HBA from eBay. IBM M1015 or a Dell PERC H200. They go around $100-$150'ish.
