Since you have a 23'' monitor I'm assuming it is 1080P. A 7970 might be overkill. I'd look at getting a single card first. Maybe a 7950 or 660Ti even. Then when you need more juice you can add a second. I wouldn't go straight to dual cards. I've always felt let down by SLI/Xfire. There's usually driver issues for new games and its useless if you play any games that don't support dual cards.
