A decent entry level solar kit + batteries is going to be in excess of $2000 to get setup, if you do everything yourself.
That's a lot of power from the electric company before it becomes worthwhile to install solar yourself. Addition to that, you need a ventilation system for open batteries, maintenance and replacing the batteries every 3-10 years (based on usage, 50% cycle, etc) as near half the cost of the entire system.. there isn't a cost-break setup that works without government sponsorship.
