Custom rom should come in a zip file. Make sure anything you have on the phone which could be important is backed up then in twrp format /cache and /data which will essentially wipe the phone. Then install the custom rom from within twrp and should be good to go.

After you have a custom rom installed check to see if there is a possible kernel to install as well to help even further with things like performance and battery life.
