RAID isn't about backups, it's about keeping the system running in the event of a drive failure by providing drive redundancy (which is why RAID 0 is a serious oxymoron).

The two cards I mentioned will also run in JBOD mode (just a bunch of disks) so you can use it as just a multi-drive controller if you wish.

The Supermicro is a decent card for its type though there are some reports that the Marvell controller is slower than LSI's. It is also a SATA II not a SATA III controller.
Obsolescence is just a lack of imagination.
