All what "crap"?

Of course you don't use services like mail/web/news/etc servers on a firewall. You do however use traffic shaping, IDS, IPS, perhaps a proxy and a number of other services related to security and filtering. All of which benefit from a little extra horsepower, especially if servicing a busy LAN.
Obsolescence is just a lack of imagination.
