That's a little strange as it shouldn't be doing that. There should be no problem with a 3.5mm TRS and have it separate the audio correctly to rca. Maybe it's the wrong kind of splitter or it's been wired wrong.
Edit: Well at least you have a solution in place. I'm sure you are dying to test everything out. Hope you are a patient person :)
Edit 2: Yeah, sounds like you have 3.5mm to dual stereo rca instead of mono. Do you have any other splitters kicking around to try?
