I use a Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT (3rd party firmware).you can do alot with ithis setup including turning up the power to the antennas for more range,with High gain (2 7dBi Antennas RP TNC Linksys WRT54G WRT54GS WRT54G-TM | eBay) antennas it puts out a pretty strong signal.

Mind you this setup has been around for years and I am not sure about new router tech.I believe wireless N is made for better range than G type
