The i5 is more than fast enough for majority of people and will provide 99% of the gaming performance of the i7. The i7 will be faster in video editing though, so that would be the only benefit for it. IMO its not worth the $100 premium unless you require the extra thread consistently (in his case if he is video editing at least every other day, then he could consider it). For ram get him to go with 8gb of 1600mhz of his choosing (bang for buck).
