I did a similar thing, 3.5mm jack to RCA adapters and then plugged them into my receiver. It worked fine for my purpose, and sounded better then the desktop speakers. You will most likely need some sort of amplification for them though, I don't know if any sound card can drive your speakers directly, but I've never really looked into it.
