Once again, the 5870 was the fastest single GPU Radeon back in it's day. You should have said that the 6970 was just barely faster than the 5870, and the 6870 was substantially slower.

Comparing the 5870 to the 7870 is not an apples to apples comparison, seeing as the 5870 was an ultra enthusiast card (same as the 7970) while the 7870 card is merely enthusiast (kinda like the 5830 was, just with a major bump in performance).

Really, the 5870 should be compared performancewise to the 7970, in which case you truly see the performance jump that AMD has achieved.

AMD changed their naming schemes with the 6xxx series.

Essentially, 79xx = 69xx = 58xx, while 78xx = 68xx = 57xx, with the resultant performance increases each year, obviously.
