People tend to forget that the 5850/5870 was more or less replaced by the 6950/6970 combo. This would be why my lowly 5830 is comparable to a 6850. So yes, your 5870 was actually a great card, and in many respects almost as fast (or faster) than a 6970. Really, the 7870 is a replacement for those people running 5850s or 6870s, while the 7950 (while expensive) would probably be your preferred replacement.
