The 520 is the low-end drive of 2012?

What exactly is making the drive so expensive? Is it the firmware itself or is it the NAND quality? If its the cost of the NAND, would Intel release a lower-end drive with cheaper NAND, but the same firmware? I like the reliability, but I'm more cost-sensitive than performance sensitive.
