If you are going with a discrete 5.1 receiver and speakers, you use the SPDIF connector from your mobo and a sound card is not required as the receiver's DAC does the sound processing. Some of the higher end "computer speaker" sets like the Logitech Z906 also have the onboard processor. To be honest, if I was spending $3-400 on a computer speaker set, I think I'd just get a HTIB set like this Onkyo one.
