Nope, its actually preferable that you leave the covering on since in most instances its been strategically designed to redirect air flow over the heatsink and other components (although some shrouds are admittedly just there as a gimmick, but the adverse impact on performance will be minimal). Keep in mind that any physical damage to the shroud also has the potential to void your warranty.

Just thought I'd add, if you have anything that works similarly to the reference design (exhaust out of the back) it is REALLY important that you keep the shroud on since thats what directs the airflow, you're almost guaranteed to overheat without it.
