You can build a complete computer, without display and input devices, for around 300$ with 2 gig of dual channel ddr2 Memory, 160GB 7200RPM hard drive. Wich is a verry nice setup for basic computing/internet/media center/office work/etc... even a little gaming.

Mother board (86$) : Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H AMD 780G mATX AM2+ 1PCI-EX 2PCI SATA W/RAID Video Sound GLAN 1394 Motherboard - DirectCanada
CPU (70$) : AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ EE Dual Core Processor AM2 Windsor 2.4GHZ 512KBX2 65W 90NM Retail Box - DirectCanada
Memory (57$) : Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400 2GB 2X1GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 CL 5-5-5-18 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory - DirectCanada
HDD (46$) : Hitachi Deskstar 7K160 160GB Sata Hard Drive 7200RPM 8MB Oem 3YR Mfr Warranty - DirectCanada
Case and PSU (43$) : Apex PC-375 Mid Tower ATX Case Black 4X5.25 1X3.5 4X3.5INT 400W - DirectCanada
Optical drive (25$) : Samsung SH-S203B Black Sata DVD+RW 20X8X16 DVD-RW 20X6X16 Dl 18X/12X Int Dvd Writer Oem W/ Vista Sw - DirectCanada

Total : 327$

This would be a pretty sweat basic setup that would run any thing you throw at it flawlessly and be upgradable for a while, since it has PCI-e a PCI-e slot available and an AM2+ socket and available memory slots for 2 more sticks.
