My System Specs

+1 for the badblocks utility. That's the first test I run on new drives that I get.

If I'm using a live CD that has badblocks, it usually has smartmontools as well, so I also run an extended self-test on the drive. I normally have to wait a day for the badblocks to finish on a large drive anyway, so adding an extra 2 hours on the self-test isn't that big a deal. A little faster than that is one pass of zero or random on the drive (pick your favourite HDD wiper) followed up by a SMART self test.

I use the SystemRescueCD for testing my drives because it doesn't waste time loading a GUI: SystemRescueCd
It has all badblocks, smartmontools, and DBAN for all my HDD torturing needs
