My System Specs

Default 1155 vs 1156 vs 1366 - thoughts?

Here's the short course. I have built a 1366/i7-930 machine that wicked fast and I love. And I have built 2 1156/i3-550 machines for the office that are nice and relatively fast. The price difference was $1800 for the first one and $800 for each of the other two.

My kid has a slow POS computer and I thought it would be a good learning experience to build a computer together.

Chip prices don't seem to be that different between socket platforms. I am vaguely aware of some issues with the sandy bridge 1155 set but I am assuming it is fixed with the new B3 (?) boards. And some reports that temps are lower and power use lower with the 1155 chips.

If you were me, which socket type would you go with (1155 / 1156 / 1366) and which CPU type would you go with ( i3 / i5 / i7 )? I guess I am kind of stuck on the intel chips as I have had good luck with them. I don't want to say that price is an issue but I am not sure she really needs an $1800 computer, but maybe something faster than the i3 machines I built.

Anyone with some opinions?
