That Netgear NAS looks promising.

I was looking for exactly the same thing a few months back and in the end decided to build my own, what I like to call NAS+.

I used an Atom based itx motherboard, 2GB of ram a decent case & installed Centos. Freenas or Openfiler woul also work great but now with Centos instead of having "just" a NAS I have a full fledged server.

The final coast would be very competitive with the standalone Netgear NAS.
