As long as you keep it dry, toner will last forevar. I dunno about most but if with mine I print a page that has a small image at the top it only uses colour for that and does pure B&W for the rest of the page that is text-only. I have not tested B&W images/line-drawings yet though.. so who knows.
However, going with B&W
will reduce your initial cost.(as you know)
