Its a simple area of extra volume, the increase in volume according to basic gas flow laws results in a slowdown at a continuous mass flow. Therefore the speed drops and its less likely to make it up against gravity. Failing to make it up it expands easier in this larger volume and results in less chance of liquid getting to the compressor. Instead you get cold gas flow, which helps compressor actually :)
