Or in my case, if they get stolen.

You only need a fast processor if you are encoding them. If you want perfect lossless copies you could do it on a Pentium 4 really all you are doing is separating the audio and video tracks then throwing them in to a different container.

But if you are encoding them to get them slightly smaller a fast processor is definitely handy. An E8400 would likely take a week to encode a single movie.
