Myself, the psu I would recommend would be Corsair. With a 890x mobo, if you get him a quad, he can drop a x6 into the board in the future. That will give him a good rig, when upgrading to the x6 he should notice the difference enough to think it's a big jump. Of course, because AMD is such a reasonable price, you could just go straight to x6 instead, how many old guys can say they have a 6 core cpu, or most other people. Good luck, it sounds like he's gonna get a nice rig regardless of what you choose.
