Sorry for quoting myself: More info on the same.

The original idea for sideport was to get around the bandwidth limitation of the Pci-express 1.1 controller they were using in between the two GPUs. It seems that the 5970s are using a far newer pci-express 2.0 one, with a great deal of bandwidth too! It's a chip by PLX.
