They both will be dropped. In time.
But for now, i7 has a 'higher' upgrade path, since they have announced ATLEAST 6 core cpus for 1366. Quad is as high as it gets for i5. Who knows what the next chipsets will be for sockets. It'll all change once Larabee or whatever its called comes out, and the gpu gets moved ondie, too.
