Yes and no, I use hole saws on a regular basis, construction worker, yes a pilot hole does help , the key is to not try and go full bore with your speed right out of the gate, ease into it, if it skips all over then you are doing it wrong, acrylic isn't a super hard substance here. Steel or metal will require a pilot hole.
If you really want to do it right throw it into a drill press.
