The i5s are going to connect using DMI (which is what the x58 uses to connect to it's southbridge) instead of QPI, which is why they have a different socket and chipsets.
Personally, I think i5s are sort of redundant too. And will likely confuse consumers with yet another socket. I know DMI is cheaper than QPI to implement (it's essentially a PCIe link), but does it really save that much money?
