I look at it this way, to treat a disease costs x amount of power ( factor everything in drug costs, needles, treatments etc, you get the idea) now if we can cure the disease then a good portion of x gets freed up. So yes it does consume a decent amount of power but in the long run it should/will pay off. Think about how much resources would be freed up if we could cure cancers or Alzheimer's.
