I know that a plain PCI gigabit NIC can max out the PCI bus (along with everything else on the bus) but PCI express gigabit card cannot max it out so if your onboard is using then PCI bus then you will noticed a big difference THEORETICALLY. However, in real life there will be very little difference, maybe a little offloading of the CPU and a bit better pings but nothing huge.
