If you haven't already run out and purchased a sound card (not that a separate sound card is a bad idea.... :) ), I'd suggest a quick check of your mobo manual to see what jumpers need to be made to enable sound without using the case connections.
I cursed my young lad's last build until I discovered that two of the jumper pin sets (on the mobo) had to be made in order to transfer the signal to the rear ports.
If your case doesn't play nice with the onboard, the onboard should still work fine from the rear ports.
