The beta has a built-in self destruct switch. I've not seen a crack to get around it, but if free is what you are after, theres plenty of linux media centre images about.
As for advice, the quieter the case, the better. I wouldn't be afraid to invest a few more dollars into getting something with quality put into it, such as using rubber mounts for HDDs and cable routing for improved airflow.
