For anyone who wants a good laugh, after I got home, I figured out the problem myself. The case fans in my dad's computer have power connectors with both the female and male ends, so that you can plug your power supply into the female end, and then plug the male end into another device so they can both be powered off the same cable. I had 1 fan each hooked up to the hard disks, so I saw power connectors plugged into the drives and stopped there without realizing the power supply was not plugged into the female ends.

So, lessons learned are Attention to detail is important, and hard drives must have power to work.
